Illinois Entertainer - Around Hear: February 2011

Handling a vast array of instruments (including accordion, mbira, and pump organ, as well as a diverse percussion collection), Darren Garvey uses an exotic palette of sounds and textures on Under A Common Ceiling (Quell). The layered tones and collisions of sounds infuse the album with a satisfying richness. Quirky, upbeat pop tunes (“As We Die,” “Misleading”) show Garvey’s deft arranging skills and his knack for writing gently energetic numbers.  – Patrick Conlan

2010 CD Baby - Review of "Under A Common Ceiling"
Editor's Pick

Deftly mixing jazz, folk, chamber pop, indie rock, and world music, this album is refreshingly varied in its restless, border-crossing musicality. Garvey, a veteran of world/experimental group Andreas Kapsalis Trio (among others), plays a roomful of instruments (honestly, the list of what he played on this album makes me salivate) and he brings in a good number of guest artists as well, to play horns, strings, flute, and more. A drummer by trade, Garvey is adept at incorporating sly grooves and rhythmic counterpoints into his songs, without distracting from melodic and chordal variations. It’s seriously interesting and engaging music that never imitates, but sometimes calls to mind similarly restless artists as Andrew Bird or Kaki King. This is good, good stuff.

"Garvey is a bundle of creativity and passion packaged in a relaxed, softspoken exterior...he is not a prisoner of old formulas. His music expresses helplessness and
vulnerability. It is dark and introspective, while managing at the same time to express optimism."
- Henry H. Perritt, Jr., IndieMusicChicago.com

"...one of greatest multi-percussionists, Darren Garvey will make you cry he's so good."  - Theresa Carter, Chicago Now (Sep 28, 2009)

"Darren Garvey, has a freaking cello bow...and he draws it over the rim of his big cymbal, which he then sets wobbling in cosmic song...and shakers...I swear Darren gets it talking…watching Darren picking up and putting down this and that — I’ve only mentioned about a tenth of what he deploys.
- Candace McNulty, Read It News Magazine - Prescott, AZ (Oct 21, 2008)

"I was captivated by...Darren Garvey's almost schizophrenic ability on a multitude of instruments."
- Theresa Carter, NBC5 Street Team - The Local Tourist (May 05, 2008)

"...percussion style is as unique as that of Kapsalis's approach to guitar. [Garvey] pushes the boundaries of percussion to the limit- and sometimes further- by using unorthodox playing techniques in combination with traditional percussion instruments, such as a cello bow on the cymbals."
- Hillel Frankel, Jazz Novo

"The parts are extremely precise, [Darren's] moving back and forth from instrument to instrument at the right time in complex time signatures and different feels."
    - Steve Edwards, Eight Forty Eight - Chicago Public Radio
